Welcome to our short-form style jacking series. We Have Clothes at Home features outfit inspiration, taking a look we love and making it our own with items we already have.
The Look
It took a re-watch of The Craft for me to fully embrace fall’s impending return - defeating my body’s perennial vitamin D deficiency does not take precedence over channelling Fairuza Balk in every way possible for the foreseeable future. Fine, maybe not every way possible - I’m not that magic power hungry (yet) - but I’m starting with her outfits. Though The Craft’s styling sometimes teeters on the brink of club goth costuming, it totters back by incorporating the staple style of the nineties: grunge. Given my newly-developed cigarette addiction, the Hole and Nirvana playlists Spotify keeps suggesting, and a recent bout of immense body negativity, it only feels right to lean into over-sized layers of black.
Sticky Point
Being a child of the former Soviet Union with mixed feelings on religion and hard-lined understanding of cultural appropriation, it is laughable to imagine myself double-crossed - in jewelry that is. However, the rest of this ‘fit is simple, clear, and already hanging in my closet waiting to be pulled out.
Pivot to Personal

Toeing the line between costume goth and cool goth certainly isn’t the hardest thing in the world, but I often second and triple guess my tightroping abilities with respect to this style. So to keep myself balanced, I’m putting on this vintage black maxi-dress with velvet detailing and an asymmetrical apron component but discarding the cross jewelry. While Nancy’s footwear is only noticeable when it’s missing, I’m choosing to put on sneakers - partly as a nod to the ever-present nineties & grunge influences, partly because I personally have transitioned to more functional footwear ever since I entered my mid-twenties (stop laughing).
I realize this is a pretty simple styling - yet every time I’ve tried this leather blazer/maxi dress combination in the past, it has always felt lackluster, or sloppy, or thrown together. I think the details of the dress, plus its true-floor-length, brings me into more intentional outfit territory. Or maybe it’s because I’m finally embracing the late 90s goth of it all!
Who’s summoning Manot with me?
Ooo eee, now I need to revisit this movie and break out my all black ensembles .
Tis the season! We are the weirdos, mister.
